Get Alarmed Maryland

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) offers free alarms to qualified residences through the Get Alarmed Maryland program. This important initiative provides one free smoke alarm and one free CO alarm to homes that do not already have these lifesaving devices installed.

Working alarms are a critical first line of defense in protecting your family and property during an emergency. Smoke alarms provide an early warning of a fire, giving you and your loved ones valuable time to escape safely. CO alarms are equally vital, as carbon monoxide is a silent, odorless gas that can be deadly without detection.  The program helps residents comply with Maryland's strict smoke alarm laws.

  • 10-Year Sealed Batteries: All battery-only smoke alarms must be replaced with units containing 10-year, non-removable, sealed lithium batteries.
  • Location Requirements: Alarms must be installed on every level of the home and in every sleeping area.
  • Replacement Cycle: Any alarm—whether hard-wired or battery-only—must be replaced 10 years after its manufacture date.

To participate, fill out the Get Alarmed MD Alarm Request Form online, submit your information, and our team will contact you to arrange the installation.
