Internships

Learn, grow and support fire safety initiatives in Maryland through hands-on experience with the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM).  We offer several opportunities that give students real-world experience, mentorship and the opportunity to contribute to statewide public safety initiatives.  

High school, college, and graduate students can gain valuable career-related experience and earn course credits through meaningful and appropriate volunteer work as part of these internships.

  These internships are sponsored by the Maryland State Firefighters Association. 

State Internship Opportunities

  1.  Maryland Service Year Option Program

    The OSFM participates in the Maryland Service Year Option Program. This program is available to high school graduates ages 18-21 who have received their high school diploma, completion certificate or earned their GED in Maryland. Members of the Program will have the opportunity to serve across the State in organizations that will provide job training and focused professional development, while earning at least $15 an hour. Upon completion of this ten-month program, members will earn up to $6,000 toward tuition costs or as a cash stipend, as determined by the Department of Service and Civic Innovation (DSCI).

  2. Credit Only Internship

    The Office of the State Fire Marshal provides a credit-only internship program. This program is designed for students who require real-world experience in the following fields, in order to complete their school requirements. 

    1. Fire/ Arson Investigation
    2. Explosive Investigation
    3. Post Blast Investigations
    4. Fire Safety/ Code Enforcement
    5. Fire Protection Engineering
