Non-Governmental Electrical Inspectors

A certified  Non-Governmental Electrical Inspector is an individual certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to inspect electrical installations for conformity with the National Electrical Code or any adopted local electrical code or amendments.

Electrical inspector licensing in the state of Maryland is certified on a fixed, three-year cycle. Applying in the middle of a certification period does not change your expiration date or prorate your application fee. Below is a table of certificate periods.

Qualifications

  • Complete an apprenticeship as an electrician
  • Complete at least 5 years of documented progressive experience in the electrical trade
  • Pass a written examination administered by the State Fire Marshal.

Application process

  • Submit a resume of qualifications, training, employment history and copies of any current electrical certifications.
  • Pay the $100.00 application fee
  • Pass a comprehensive written examination administered by OSFM.
  • If renewing, pay the $50.00 online. Certificates are valid for 3 years.
  • Certificate holders must notify the OSFM in writing of an address change within 10 business days.

Note: Instead of the experience required above, an electrical engineering degree or accumulated credits in combination with education, training, and experience may be considered by the OSFM to meet the qualifications.

Application processing time

  • New: Final issuance of the license will depend on the time to successfully complete the examination, however, most licenses are issued within 30 days of the final application being submitted.
  • Renewal: Please allow 10 to 30 days for final issuance.
