Sound Off Program

The Maryland Sound Off Program is a fire safety initiative that provides free smoke alarms and home safety education to residents—especially those at higher risk of fire.

What the program does

  • Installs free smoke alarms in homes that need them
  • Checks existing alarms to make sure they work
  • Provides fire safety tips to residents

Who it helps

  • Older adults
  • Low-income households
  • People with disabilities
  • Communities with higher fire risk

How it works

Local fire departments visit homes (often by request or through community outreach) to:

  • Install or replace smoke alarms
  • Help create a home fire escape plan
  • Answer safety questions

Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. The program helps prevent injuries and saves lives across Maryland.
