Fire Prevention Internship

The Fire Prevention intern will support the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Community Risk Reduction Unit to assist with the statewide implementation of the OSFM Community Risk Reduction Strategic Plan and fire prevention activities.

What you’ll do

Under the supervision of the OSFM Public Education and Risk Reduction Officer, tasks may include:

  • Documenting workflows and processes
  • Supporting goals outlined in the Community Risk Reduction Strategic Plan
  • Reviewing, drafting, and updating policies and standard operating procedures
  • Preparing materials for risk-reduction initiatives and grant projects
  • Assisting with data analytics and GIS map building

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a Maryland-accredited college or university.

Preferred qualifications

  • Full-time enrollment in an associate, bachelor’s or graduate program in fire science or public safety administration
  • Basic knowledge of fire prevention, safety procedures, and regulated guidelines
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to teach or present information
  • Experience with record keeping, computer tools, data analytics, or GIS systems

Selection process

  • Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered
  • Submit a detailed resume with three references, at least one must be a facility member
  • Pass an abbreviated background investigation.
  • Application deadline: Currently not accepting applications
  • Candidates will be interviewed and evaluated based on their resume, qualifications, and interview performance
  • Applicants who are selected will receive an invitation to interview

Program requirements

  • Available to commit to a full-time internship for 10 hours per week for 12 months
  • Meet legal requirements to work in the U.S.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Work a hybrid schedule
  • Provide your own transportation
  • $500 monthly stipend
