Fire Protection Engineer Internship

The Fire Protection Engineer intern will support the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Engineering workgroup in implementing new state technology systems, including computer-aided dispatch tools, records management systems, and engineering software. These tools improve how the Engineering section reviews building plans and provide technical guidance to architects, engineers, and design professionals.

What you’ll do

You will work under the supervision of the OSFM Special Projects staff and receive daily guidance from the Engineering section. Tasks may include:

  • Documenting workflows and engineering processes
  • Reviewing, drafting, and updating policies and standard operating procedures
  • Helping define and document the work assigned to the Engineering Section
  • Assisting engineers with analyzing building designs and identifying fire hazards
  • Supporting the design of fire protection systems
  • Reviewing laws and regulations to support updated digital workflows
  • Evaluating digital plan submissions
  • Researching the use of AI tools for plan review
  • Helping design and support a statewide pilot program

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from an accredited college or university.

Preferred qualifications

  • Full-time enrollment in a fire protection engineering bachelor’s or graduate program at a Maryland college or university (other engineering fields may be considered)
  • Knowledge in areas such as
    • Math
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Engineering fundamentals
    • Programming languages
    • CAD tools, or
    • Data analytics
  • Experience with process mapping or business process modeling
  • Skills in communication, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, adaptability, or leadership
